At that meeting we listened to Muthoka. His eyes lit up as he talked of Kenya and saddened as he told us of the medical plight of his people. We asked many questions: "How big a clinic do you see?" "How would the clinic run?" Questions, dreams and the actual first rendering of the clinic fell into place that very day as we sat on the floor drawing with crayons. When we finished, the dream that had been floating in Muthoka's head for years was suddenly down on paper. It was our project!
Up to this time, we had been informally calling ourselves the East Africa Group, then the East African Mission, but never quite feeling comfortable with the name. As we looked at the potential growth for such a program we decided to just "open the door to all possibilities". We struggled through all sorts of ideas, we brainstormed, we prayed and it came, International Development Missions. IDM was us. IDM was what we wanted to do and we could never outgrow it.
So, this is when my story turns into the IDM story. It is no longer about me, or any individual for that matter. It is about saying "yes" when the phone rings and the caller offers you an opportunity that most sane people would run away from. It is about identifying need and making something happen. It is about stepping out in faith. It is about dreams coming true. Watching the growth of this clinic is such an expression of God's blessings that it is humbling. ♥
